A magyarországi romák tömeges érkezése is közrejátszhat abban, hogy Kanada egy új menekültjogi törvényt igyekszik kidolgozni. A C-31-es nevet viselő jogszabályt a kanadai parlament Bevándorlási Bizottsága tárgyalta a héten, melyre behívták az ottawai konzuli hivatal vezetőjét, Helyes Imre vezető konzult. A magyar diplomatát a többi között a magyarországi romák helyzetéről faggatták. Helyes szerint a romák pusztán gazdasági érdekből utaznak Kanadába, de egy kanadai tudósító szerint a magyar diplomata utalást tett olyan szélsőjobboldali magyar milíciákra is, amelyek „náci stílusú egyenruhát viselnek, és zaklatják, valamint olykor ténylegesen bántalmazzák a romákat".
